Attero Opens Greater Noida R&D Centre to Push Critical-Mineral Recovery Toward Industrial Scale

Sep 22, 2026

3 minute read.

Highlights

  • Attero operationalized a DSIR-recognized R&D Centre of Excellence in Greater Noida focused on recycling, refining, and critical mineral recovery from secondary feedstocks.
  • CEO Nitin Gupta claimed over 98% rare earth recovery efficiency from magnets and profitable operation at roughly 100 tonnes per year, though figures are unaudited.
  • Attero plans approximately ₹70 billion over five years for Indian rare earth and critical mineral refining, but investors should watch feedstock volumes and output data, not announcements.
  • The facility will develop robotics-based battery cutting, hydrometallurgical processes, and automation, backed by a portfolio of 50 granted patents and 200 filings.
  • Recycled rare earths could reduce dependence on new mines, but collection density, separation economics, purity, and customer qualification at scale remain unproven.

India's Attero (opens in a new tab) has operationalized a Greater Noida (opens in a new tab) R&D Centre of Excellence in Uttar Pradesh targeting recycling, refining, automation, and recovery of critical minerals—including rare earth elements—from batteries, electronics, and other secondary feedstocks. The headline is legitimate, but investors should separate technology capability from commercial rare-earth tonnage: the announcement provides no new REE production capacity, feedstock volume, or unit-economics data.

REEx Insight: India Is Building the Missing Middle

This matters because the West's China problem is not a shortage of geological announcements; it is a shortage of processing ecosystems. Attero is attacking that problem from the opposite direction—urban mining → recovery → refining → reusable material. That distinction becomes important in Great Powers Era 2.0™. Recycling creates geographically distributed feedstock that does not require a new mine, but technology alone cannot create supply security. Collection density, magnet feedstock, separation economics, product purity, and qualification at scale determine whether recycled REEs become strategic supply.

Nitin Gupta, CEO

REEx interviewed co-founder and CEO Nitin Gupta in August 2025 (opens in a new tab), when he said Attero recovered rare earths from magnets at greater than 98% efficiency and could operate magnet-recycling modules profitably at roughly 100 tonnes/year. Those were company claims, not independently audited REEx measurements.

More revealingly, Gupta predicted recycled magnets could exceed 50% of supply by 2030—an extraordinarily aggressive forecast—and acknowledged Attero was not then producing heavy rare earths, although it intended to pursue them.

The Laboratory Now Has to Meet the Factory

Attero says the new DSIR-recognized center will develop robotics-based battery cutting, advanced filtration, roasting, automation, and hydrometallurgical processes. Its broader technology portfolio now exceeds 50 granted patents and 200 filings.

The ambition is increasingly industrial: Attero separately plans roughly ₹70 billion ($800+ million) over five years for Indian rare-earth and critical-mineral refining and processing.

For investors, watch the next numbers—not the ribbon cutting: tonnes of magnet feedstock, separated Nd/Pr/Dy/Tb output, recoveries, purity, cost/kg, and qualified customers.
