Energy Fuels Qualifies U.S.-Produced Terbium Oxide for Japanese Permanent Magnets

Energy Fuels just put another runner on base—but investors should remember this rare earth game is still in the early innings. The company says terbium oxide produced at its White Mesa Mill in Utah has been fully qualified for commercial use by an unnamed major Japanese permanent-magnet manufacturer, with no further validation required. Rare Earth Exchanges® suggests that is meaningful: terbium helps NdFeB magnets resist demagnetization at high temperatures and remains one of the most strategically difficult magnet rare earths to source outside China. Energy Fuels has now achieved (opens in a new tab) customer qualification for NdPr, dysprosium, and terbium oxides. But qualification is not the same as commercial-scale Tb production, binding offtake, revenue, or profitability.

REEx Insight: Early Innings in a Nine-Inning Game

This is precisely where investors should separate a good hit from a final score. Energy Fuels is attempting something unusually ambitious: connect mineral feedstock → separated NdPr/Dy/Tb oxides → metals and alloys → finished magnets. That attacks the midstream bottleneck where Western rare earth independence repeatedly breaks down. Customer qualification matters because an external magnet producer has effectively said the material meets its specifications. What Energy Fuels does not disclose, however, is the Japanese customer, qualification volume, specifications, pricing, or a resulting purchase commitment.

From Qualification to Tonnes

The next innings are harder. Energy Fuels began construction of its commercial-scale White Mesa Dy/Tb circuits on July 29, targeting completion by year-end 2027. Australian Strategic Materials' (opens in a new tab) (ASM) partnership would add operating metals/alloys capability in South Korea; the proposed $1.9 billion VAC acquisition would add established magnet manufacturing, including its Sumter, South Carolina plant. But both transactions still carry closing and integration risk.

Investor Takeaway

Energy Fuels has demonstrated that it can make qualifiable material. Now investors need tonnes, recoveries, costs, secure feedstock, contracts, and margins. The scoreboard matters more than the highlight reel. Energy Fuels is putting together an intriguing lineup—but this Western mine-to-magnet game remains in the early innings.
