Highlights
- Iluka Resources is transitioning from mineral sands to become one of the Western world's most strategically significant rare earth companies.
- Nearly A$1 billion invested and engineering nearly complete, with Eneabba Rare Earth Refinery targeting 2027 commissioning.
- Critical unanswered questions remain around long-term feedstock supply, Western magnet demand, and economic competitiveness against China's subsidized separation industry.
- Conventional valuation models fail to capture execution risk, capital requirements, and the time needed to reach stable commercial rare earth production.
- REEx urges investors to analyze the full mine-to-magnet supply chain, industrial policy, and geopolitical context before acting on standard analyst price targets.
Australia's Iluka Resources (ASX: ILU) is rapidly evolving from a mineral sands producer into one of the Western world's most strategically important rare earth companies. Most investment commentary—including a recent analysis (opens in a new tab) by Simply Wall St—focuses on valuation models and the government-backed Eneabba Rare Earth Refinery, concluding the shares may be undervalued.
Rare Earth Exchanges® agrees that Eneabba could become one of the West's most important strategic assets. But we believe most investors are looking at the wrong metrics.
The real story isn't whether Iluka can build the refinery. Engineering is nearly complete, almost A$1 billion has already been invested, and construction continues toward a planned 2027 commissioning.
The harder questions begin after construction ends.
How long will it take to reach stable commercial production? Where will enough long-term feedstock come from? Will Western magnet manufacturers emerge quickly enough to absorb separated rare earth oxides? Can Eneabba compete economically against China's mature and heavily subsidized separation industry? And how much additional capital and time may be required before meaningful free cash flow emerges?
These are the risks that conventional discounted cash flow models rarely capture.
At Rare Earth Exchanges, we analyze companies through the lens of the entire mine-to-magnet supply chain, industrial policy, geopolitics, and execution risk—not simply quarterly earnings or analyst price targets.
