JS Link Pushes Toward Ex-China Magnet Production-And Earns Credibility by Admitting What Still Doesn't Work

3 minute read.

Highlights

  • JS Link reports mid-90% production yields for qualifying magnet grades and is shipping customer samples as commercial scale-up progresses.
  • The company openly discloses that its ultra-high coercivity Grain Boundary Diffusion process has not yet met target performance, adding rare credibility.
  • JS Link is expanding into Kuantan, Malaysia, positioning itself within the growing ex-China rare earth magnet supply chain.
  • Grain Boundary Diffusion technology reduces reliance on costly heavy rare earths like dysprosium and terbium, critical for EV motors and defense applications.
  • Investors are advised to view JS Link's transparency about unsolved technical challenges as a positive indicator of realistic commercial development.

South Korea's JS Link (opens in a new tab) is progressing toward commercial production of NdFeB permanent magnets while expanding its manufacturing footprint into Malaysia. Its latest technical update contains something uncommon in the rare earth industry: an unusually candid disclosure that its ultra-high coercivity (UH-grade) Grain Boundary Diffusion (GBD) process has not yet achieved target performance (opens in a new tab). The Rare Earth Exchanges® perspective: Investors should view this as evidence of engineering discipline rather than weakness. Manufacturing world-class rare earth magnets outside China remains one of the most technically demanding challenges in the global critical minerals supply chain.

The Real Challenge Begins After the Prototype

Producing a laboratory-quality magnet is one thing. Producing thousands of identical, high-performance magnets every day—with consistent quality, competitive costs, and commercial yields—is another entirely. JS Link reports (opens in a new tab) that customer sample shipments are underway, magnet block production yields for qualifying grades have reached the mid-90% range, and construction planning continues for a manufacturing facility in Kuantan, Malaysia, a location rapidly emerging as a key node in the ex-China rare earth ecosystem.

The Most Important Sentence in the Newsletter

One sentence deserves more attention than any headline: "However, for UH-grade targets, coercivity (Hcj) has fallen slightly short of the target value..." That single sentence adds credibility. Grain Boundary Diffusion is among the most sophisticated processes in NdFeB magnet manufacturing. It enables higher coercivity while minimizing the use of expensive heavy rare earths such as dysprosium and terbium. Those properties become increasingly important in demanding applications including electric vehicle traction motors, aerospace systems, robotics, and defense technologies.

JS Link reports that it has successfully demonstrated GBD on N52 magnets with SH-grade magnetic performance, while optimization of UH-grade products continues. That is what real manufacturing development looks like.

Why Investors Should Care

JS Link is positioning itself as an emerging ex-China permanent magnet manufacturer by combining South Korean production with planned Malaysian expansion, ongoing customer qualification, independent product verification, and discussions with an unnamed rare earth partner to help secure both light and heavy rare earth feedstocks.

Many companies announce breakthroughs. Fewer acknowledge what remains unsolved.

For investors, the most valuable takeaway is not that JS Link has mastered permanent magnet manufacturing—it has not claimed that. Rather, the company has demonstrated a realistic understanding of the final technical hurdles separating successful pilot-scale engineering from sustainable commercial production. In rare earths, that level of transparency is uncommon—and often more informative than another optimistic press release.
