Volta Metals Extends Springer Gallium Mineralization 210 Meters Beyond Defined Rare-Earth Resource

Aug 17, 2026

4 minute read.

Highlights

  • Hole SL26-31 intercepted 399 meters grading 51.8 g/t gallium oxide starting just 3 meters below surface, well outside the defined rare-earth resource boundary.
  • Springer's February 2026 resource estimate holds 56.6 Mt Indicated at 0.70% TREO and 119.5 Mt Inferred at 0.58% TREO, with NdPr driving ~90% of net metal value—gallium not yet included.
  • Over 90% of 863 samples from three drill holes exceeded 30 g/t Ga₂O₃, suggesting gallium may occupy a footprint larger than the existing REE mineralization.
  • Metallurgical work by SGS Lakefield, Laurentian University, and Idaho National Laboratory is underway, but commercial gallium recovery has not yet been demonstrated.
  • Volta acquired three adjoining claims east of Springer, expanding the land package and advancing toward 100% project ownership.

Volta Metals Ltd (opens in a new tab). (CSE: VLTA; OTCQB: VOLMF) reports that drilling at its Springer rare-earth element (REE) project (opens in a new tab) in Ontario has traced gallium mineralization approximately 210 meters beyond the existing rare-earth resource boundary, raising the possibility that an already large neodymium-praseodymium (NdPr)-driven deposit could eventually carry a second strategic-mineral value stream.

The headline intercept is striking: hole SL26-31 reportedly encountered 399 meters grading 51.8 grams per metric ton (g/t) gallium oxide (Ga₂O₃) beginning just three meters below surface. Another hole returned 53.9 meters grading 1.22% total rare earth oxides (TREO) and 47 g/t Ga₂O₃. But there is an important distinction: Volta has demonstrated widespread gallium mineralization—not economic gallium recovery.

REEx Insight: Gallium Changes the Strategic Equation—If It Can Be Recovered

This matters because Western governments are urgently searching for alternatives to China's dominant position in gallium supply. Springer is not starting from zero. Volta's February 2026 mineral resource estimate contains 56.6 million metric tons (Mt) Indicated at 0.70% TREO and 119.5 Mt Inferred at 0.58% TREO. The company says NdPr generates approximately 90% of Springer's estimated net metal value.

Gallium was not included in that resource estimate. If metallurgical work demonstrates commercially viable recovery, gallium could potentially improve Springer's economics without requiring Volta to discover an entirely separate deposit.

That is the opportunity—and metallurgy is the gatekeeper.

Gallium Where the Rare Earths Aren't

The unusual geological signal is that gallium reportedly occurs broadly outside Springer's higher-grade rare-earth zones. More than 90% of 863 samples from three holes reportedly exceeded 30 g/t Ga₂O₃. Volta believes gallium largely substitutes for aluminum in potassium feldspar surrounding carbonatite veins. If confirmed across the deposit, the gallium footprint could be substantially larger than the currently defined REE mineralization.

Testing is therefore critical. SGS Lakefield Research (opens in a new tab) achieved 88.2% rare-earth recovery using conventional flotation, while Laurentian University is investigating gallium bio-heap-leaching and Volta is collaborating with Idaho National Laboratory (INL) on REE-gallium processing. These gallium recovery claims are not contained in the August 11 Volta release supplied to REEx and require independent verification.

Springer Gets Bigger Strategically

Separately, Volta has agreed to acquire three adjoining claims east of Springer, creating a contiguous land package and a path toward 100% project ownership. The new ground is undrilled and carries no defined resource. Springer also benefits from highways, nearby hydroelectric power, natural gas, and rail infrastructure.

The importance is straightforward: Springer could evolve from a large Canadian NdPr resource into a strategically more valuable REE-gallium system. But drill assays establish geological potential; recovery and economics determine whether that potential becomes Western supply.
