Mkango Expands Germany Magnet Recycling Footprint With Remloy Acquisition

May 20, 2026

4 minute read.

Highlights

  • Mkango Resources acquires Germany's Heraeus Remloy rare earth magnet recycling business for €8 million, gaining an operational facility with 300+ tonnes of feedstock inventory and targeting commercial alloy powder sales by year-end.
  • The acquisition advances Mkango's vertical integration strategy from mine-to-magnet, combining HyProMag's UK recycling tech, Remloy's medium-loop alloy production, Malawi's Songwe Hill project, and proposed Polish separation capacity.
  • While strategically aligned with Western efforts to reduce Chinese NdFeB supply chain dependence, key risks remain around customer qualification timelines, sustainable feedstock sourcing, and achieving commercial-scale profitability in Europe's high-cost environment.

Mkango Resources (opens in a new tab) Ltd (AIM/TSX-V: MKA) (Mkango) acquires Heraeus Remloy’s (opens in a new tab) rare earth magnet recycling business in Germany for €8 million. The deal materially expands Mkango’s downstream rare earth footprint in Europe and strengthens its positioning across recycled NdFeB alloys, magnet feedstock, and circular magnet supply chains. For investors, the transaction matters because it pushes Mkango deeper into the most strategically constrained part of the rare earth ecosystem: downstream processing and magnet materials. However, commercialization, qualification, and scaling risks remain significant.

Germany Becomes a Strategic Magnet Hub

Mkango announced it will acquire Remloy, a Germany-based rare-earth alloy recycling business based in Bitterfeld. The facility uses a melting-based “medium-loop” recycling process to produce neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) alloy powders used in bonded and hot-deformed magnet applications.

This is strategically important because Western rare-earth weakness increasingly lies downstream—not just in mining.

REEx has repeatedly emphasized that the critical bottlenecks are:

  • Rare earth separation
  • Metallization
  • Alloy production
  • Magnet manufacturing
  • Customer qualification at an industrial scale

Mkango’s broader portfolio now spans:

  • HyProMag’s short-loop HPMS recycling technology
  • Remloy’s medium-loop alloy recycling platform
  • Songwe Hill upstream rare earth development in Malawi
  • Proposed rare earth separation capacity in Poland

That emerging vertical integration story is increasingly differentiated among Western rare earth juniors.

What Appears Credible

Unlike many speculative rare earth announcements, this transaction includes tangible industrial assets:

  • A commissioned operating facility
  • Existing technical personnel
  • Over 300 tonnes of magnet and alloy feedstock inventory
  • Minimal additional development capex claimed by management
  • Commercial sample qualification already underway

The facility reportedly aims to achieve first commercial alloy powder sales by year-end, though management acknowledges the business remains pre-revenue.  Importantly, the acquisition also aligns with broader European and U.S. policy efforts to reduce dependence on Chinese NdFeB magnet supply chains.

Critical Questions Investors Should Still Ask

The release includes understandable promotional framing that investors should evaluate critically.

Key unresolved questions include:

  • Can Remloy consistently produce automotive- or defense-grade alloy powders?
  • What are the actual customer qualification timelines?
  • What margins can be achieved in Europe, given energy and labor costs?
  • How sustainable is feedstock sourcing after the initial stockpile is consumed?
  • Will additional capex eventually be required despite current guidance?

These issues matter because downstream rare earth processing remains operationally difficult and economically fragile outside China.

REEx Market Perspective

Fundamentally, Mkango is evolving into one of the few Western-listed rare earth companies attempting to build a genuine mine-to-magnet ecosystem rather than a standalone mining project.

Technically, however, the stock still carries junior-resource volatility:

  • Ongoing dilution risk
  • Dependence on grants and strategic financing
  • Execution-sensitive valuation
  • Exposure to still-thin ex-China magnet markets

Nevertheless, among Western rare earth equities, Mkango increasingly appears more industrially serious than many peers focused solely on upstream narratives.

REEx Takeaway

The United States and Europe will not rebuild rare earth resilience through mining alone. Recycling, alloying, metallization, and magnet manufacturing are emerging as the real strategic battlegrounds. Mkango’s Remloy acquisition appears directionally aligned with that industrial reality. Whether the company can now execute commercially at scale remains the central investor question.

Company Ownership

Mkango Resources continues to build a vertically integrated rare earth structure spanning mining, recycling, alloy production, and proposed separation infrastructure across multiple jurisdictions. The Canadian parent company wholly owns upstream exploration entities in Malawi tied to the Songwe Hill rare earth project, while its most strategically important asset is its 79.4% ownership stake in Maginito, the company’s downstream recycling and magnet materials platform. Through Maginito, Mkango controls HyProMag operations in the UK, Germany, and the United States, as well as Mkango Rare Earths UK, providing exposure to HPMS recycling technology and emerging Western magnet supply chains. The company also fully owns Mkango Polska, which is tied to a proposed rare earth separation facility in Poland. Overall, the structure shows Mkango evolving beyond a traditional junior miner into a broader mine-to-magnet industrial strategy focused on building ex-China rare earth ecosystem capacity—though doing so introduces substantial execution, financing, and operational complexity.
