About Proterial (fmr Hitachi Metals)
Proterial, Ltd., formerly Hitachi Metals, is a Japanese advanced materials manufacturer headquartered in Tokyo and a leading producer of rare earth permanent magnets. Acquired by a Bain Capital-led consortium in 2022 and rebranded as Proterial in early 2023, the company is privately held. Proterial manufactures high-performance sintered neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) magnets under its NEOMAX brand, using rare earth elements including neodymium, praseodymium, dysprosium and terbium, and holds foundational patents in sintered NdFeB technology that helped shape the modern magnet industry. Its magnets and magnetic materials serve automotive traction motors, electronics, industrial machinery, energy and infrastructure markets worldwide. Beyond magnets, Proterial produces specialty steels, magnetic and electronic materials, and automotive components. The company has explored expanding rare earth magnet manufacturing capacity outside Japan, including evaluating production in India, as automakers seek diversified, non-China sources of magnet supply.
