About Thailand
Thailand's role in the rare-earth supply chain is processing and trade rather than mining. An economic review published by the Department of Primary Industries and Mines (DPIM) states that the country has no rare-earth mining and produces rare earths by dressing imported ore. USGS estimates Thai production from China's reported imports, so its figure measures shipments into China.
Further downstream, Neo Performance Materials makes Magnequench NdFeB powders at Korat from material sourced outside China. The main material, neodymium oxide, is converted to metal by GQD Special Material, a Rayong joint venture in which Neo holds a minority stake. Hastings Technology Metals agreed to buy a stake in a Kabin Buri plant that turns monazite concentrate into mixed rare earth chloride, with African monazite lined up as feed. The open question is whether ore dressing and powder making grow into rare-earth separation inside Thailand.
