Metallium Limited Converts Raw Rare-Earth Ore Into >83% Mixed Chloride Product - Scale-Up Becomes the Test

Aug 11, 2026

4 minute read.

Highlights

  • Raw unbeneficiated ore with ~12% TREO was converted in one unoptimized FJH cycle into a product containing >83 wt% mixed REE chlorides with >4x NdPr enrichment.
  • Germanium was enriched up to 280x from zinc-smelter waste, and PGM testing yielded a >60%-purity Pt-Pd-Rh product with ~75% faster processing than conventional methods.
  • Red-mud testing removed ~99% iron and 94% silicon while retaining ~95% aluminum and separately concentrating gallium, highlighting industrial waste as a potential domestic feedstock.
  • Key commercial metrics remain undisclosed, including REE recovery percentage, energy consumption, reagent costs, and operating cost per tonne, keeping the company in speculative territory.
  • Metallium holds ~A$251 million market cap and ~A$65 million cash, targeting initial PCB-processing product sales in H1 2027 as it works to validate FJH at commercial scale.

Metallium Limited (ASX: MTM; OTCQX: MTMCF/MTLMY) has reported encouraging Flash Joule Heating (FJH) tests across rare earths, germanium, platinum-group metals and red mud—potentially expanding its technology beyond its primary e-waste business. The headline rare-earth result: raw, unbeneficiated ore containing ~12% TREO was converted in one unoptimized cycle into a product containing >83 wt% mixed REE chlorides, with >4x enrichment of NdPr. Germanium was enriched by up to 280x, while catalytic-converter testing produced a >60%-purity PGM-rich product. The results are technically interesting. They are not yet proof of commercial economics. Activity reported midstream and involving recycling.

REEx Insight | If It Scales, This Could Attack the Right Bottleneck

America does not simply need more rare-earth deposits. It needs economical ways of turning difficult feedstocks into material that existing separation infrastructure can process. That makes Metallium's rare-earth experiment noteworthy. The company says FJH potentially eliminates or reduces conventional beneficiation and chemical-processing steps while producing a chloride intermediate compatible with downstream separation.

But investors should notice what remains undisclosed: REE recovery percentage, throughput, energy consumption, reagent cost, impurity behavior, operating cost per tonne and commercial-scale qualification. Moreover, >83% refers to REE chloride compounds, including chlorine mass, not 83% contained rare-earth elements. That distinction separates an intriguing laboratory result from a bankable flowsheet.

Beyond Rare Earths | Waste Becomes Strategic Ore

Germanium may be equally compelling. Metallium reports enrichment of 280x from zinc-smelter waste, 240x from semiconductor waste and 35x from defense-related industrial waste. It is also discussing potential commercial pathways with U.S. defense-industry participants. PGM testing produced a >60%-purity Pt-Pd-Rh product and indicated processing time could fall roughly 75% versus conventional multi-stage recycling. Red-mud testing removed ~99% iron and 94% silicon while retaining ~95% aluminum and concentrating gallium separately.

The strategic thesis is powerful: America cannot mine its way out of every critical-material dependency. Industrial waste itself may become domestic feedstock.

Stock Check | The Market Wants Proof

MTM closed August 11 at approximately A$0.34, with market capitalization near A$251 million. That remains dramatically below its prior 52-week highs and signals that investors are applying a substantial execution discount.

Fundamentally, Metallium remains pre-commercial. It reported approximately A$65 million cash at June 30 and continues targeting initial PCB-processing product sales in H1 2027.

REEx assessment: strategically relevant and technically promising—but still speculative. The next rerating should come from repeatable recoveries, operating economics, customer qualification and commercial contracts, not another laboratory headline.

Profile

Metallium Ltd (formerly MTM Critical Metals Limited) is an Australian critical-metals technology and mineral exploration company headquartered in Subiaco, Western Australia, and publicly traded on the ASX as MTM and in the U.S. OTC market as MTMCF. Its emerging strategic focus is its patented FJH platform, which aims to provide a lower-carbon, energy-efficient method for recovering high-value materials—including rare earth elements, gallium, germanium, antimony and gold—from mineral concentrates, refinery residues, electronic waste and other secondary feedstocks.

Metallium also maintains mineral exploration interests prospective for commodities including gold, lithium, niobium, nickel, cobalt, graphite and base metals in Western Australia and Québec. The investment proposition increasingly centers on whether Metallium can move FJH from promising technical testing into repeatable, economically competitive commercial-scale processing and licensing.
