About ANSTO

The Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) is the Australian Government’s national nuclear research and development body, headquartered at Lucas Heights in southern Sydney, New South Wales. As a sovereign research institution, ANSTO operates the OPAL multi-purpose reactor and the Australian Synchrotron and plays a central role in Australia’s critical minerals and rare earth processing capability.

In May 2026, ANSTO opened Australia’s first purpose-built clay-hosted rare earth pilot processing plant and a high-temperature chlorination facility at Lucas Heights, developed with support from the Australian Critical Minerals Research and Development Hub. These shared national facilities allow companies to test and validate rare earth extraction and separation flowsheets for elements such as neodymium, praseodymium, dysprosium and terbium, reducing project risk as Australia seeks to break China’s dominance in rare earth refining. ANSTO has decades of expertise in mineral processing, including the ALPHA process used in monazite treatment.
