About Myanmar Rebels

“Myanmar Rebels” refers collectively to the ethnic armed organizations, most prominently the Kachin Independence Army (KIA), that control the heavy rare earth mining belt of northern Myanmar’s Kachin State, a critical and unregulated link in the global rare earth supply chain. In October 2024 the KIA seized the towns of Chipwi and Pangwa, home to one of the world’s richest concentrations of dysprosium and terbium, from a rival pro-junta militia, taking over hundreds of mine sites and the export taxation that comes with them. The ion-adsorption clay deposits there supply heavy rare earths essential to permanent magnets for electric vehicles, wind turbines and defense systems, and Myanmar has become China’s largest external supplier, accounting for the majority of China’s heavy rare earth feedstock imports. The number of active mining sites rose from about 130 in 2020 to over 370 by the end of 2024, with exports valued in the billions of dollars and significant environmental damage reported.
