About Malawi
Malawi's rare-earth deposits sit mainly in carbonatites in its Southern Region, and the country is moving from exploration toward mining. USGS lists no rare-earth production or reserves for Malawi.
Kangankunde, about 90 kilometers north of Blantyre, is a carbonatite deposit where Lindian Resources is building a mine and a plant to upgrade monazite ore into concentrate for export. Iluka Resources has contracted part of that concentrate for its Eneabba refinery in Western Australia. Lindian's SARECO carbonate plant at Stepnogorsk in Kazakhstan gives it a second route downstream.
Songwe Hill, in Phalombe District near the Mozambique border, is Mkango's carbonatite project. It is designed to make a mixed rare earth carbonate for a separation plant the company is developing in Poland.
Heavy mineral sands offer a second source. Sovereign Metals has studied recovering monazite as a by-product at its Kasiya rutile and graphite project near Lilongwe.
The government has pushed miners to do more processing at home. Whether Malawi can keep value beyond the concentrate stage is the open question for every project here.
