About IREL (India) Limited
IREL (India) Limited, formerly Indian Rare Earths Limited, is a state-owned (Public Sector Undertaking) rare earths and heavy-mineral mining and processing company headquartered in Mumbai, India, operating under the Department of Atomic Energy. Established in 1950, IREL is the country’s flagship producer of beach-sand minerals and rare earth compounds, mining and separating ilmenite, rutile, zircon, monazite, sillimanite and garnet across units in Kerala (Chavara, Aluva), Tamil Nadu (Manavalakurichi) and Odisha (OSCOM). Its Rare Earth Extraction Plant at OSCOM in Odisha processes monazite into mixed rare-earth chloride, which its Rare Earths Division at Aluva, Kerala, refines into separated oxides of lanthanum, cerium, neodymium-praseodymium, samarium, europium, gadolinium and yttrium. IREL is setting up a samarium-cobalt permanent-magnet plant at Visakhapatnam for atomic-energy and defense use.
