About Kazakhstan
Kazakhstan has no reported rare-earth mine output, yet it has a rare-earth processing plant, and its government reports large new rare-earth resources.
The plant is SARECO in Stepnogorsk, set up by Kazatomprom and Sumitomo Corporation to recover rare earths from uranium-ore residue and make mixed rare earth carbonate. Australia's Lindian Resources, which says it has bought the plant, plans to feed it concentrate from its Kangankunde project in Malawi, while it evaluates feedstock available in Kazakhstan.
The resource claim centers on Kuirektykol in Karaganda region, where state-program prospecting found rare-earth mineralization in an altered ancient volcanic structure that the Ministry of Industry and Construction calls a new industrial type for Kazakhstan. The ministry has published forecast resources for Kuirektykol and for a wider area it named Zhana Kazakhstan. Its figures do not make clear whether they count ore or contained metal, and the ministry itself says the deposits need further confirmation.
Ferro-Alloy Resources has run initial tests on recovering rare earths from the leach solutions of its planned vanadium process at Balasausqandiq. The open question is whether resource work to international reporting codes, and a working flowsheet, can turn these claims into feed for a plant inside Kazakhstan.
