About Greenland
Greenland holds substantial rare-earth reserves, according to the USGS, yet no mine produces them. Law is part of the reason.
Uranium divides two deposits in southern Greenland. A Greenland law bans uranium mining and extends the ban to any mineral project whose total resource averages 100 ppm uranium or more. The government refused an exploitation license for Kvanefjeld, saying the application conflicted with that law, and the developer, Energy Transition Minerals, took the refusal to court.
Tanbreez, near Qaqortoq, is hosted in eudialyte-bearing rock. Its developer reports heavy rare earths at about a quarter of total oxides and uranium only at background levels. Its 30-year exploitation license predates the uranium law, which applies only to licenses issued after it took effect.
Sarfartoq, in the southwest, is a carbonatite deposit whose owner describes it as rich in neodymium and praseodymium.
The open question is whether a licensed, low-uranium deposit can secure financing and a proven processing route for eudialyte ore.
