About United Kingdom

The United Kingdom has no rare-earth mine production and does not appear in the USGS world production table. Its place in the supply chain is downstream, in metal making and magnet recycling, and in the London capital market that finances mines abroad.

At Ellesmere Port, Less Common Metals makes neodymium-praseodymium, samarium and samarium-cobalt metals and alloys, as well as strip-cast NdFeB alloy. USA Rare Earth says that strip-cast alloy is to supply its magnet plant in Stillwater, Oklahoma.

In Birmingham, HyProMag recovers NdFeB alloy powder from magnet scrap at Tyseley Energy Park using hydrogen processing, a technology developed at the University of Birmingham, and is developing magnet production there. In Belfast, Ionic Technologies, owned by Ionic Rare Earths and built on Queen's University Belfast research, is developing a plant to turn end-of-life magnets into rare-earth oxides.

Rare-earth developers with deposits in Africa also register and list in London. Among them are Pensana, which is developing the Longonjo project in Angola, and Harena, which holds the Ampasindava project in Madagascar.

Whether recycled feed and imported material can keep magnet making in the United Kingdom supplied at commercial scale is the open question.
