About Brazil
Brazil holds large rare-earth deposits but little of the industry that turns them into magnets. Ionic-adsorption clays occur in Goiás and near Poços de Caldas, Minas Gerais. Rare earths sit with niobium at Araxá and in the Catalão carbonatites, and Bahia has monazite in heavy-mineral sands and weathered saprolite.
Serra Verde's Pela Ema ionic-clay mine near Minaçu, Goiás, produces a mixed rare earth carbonate carrying neodymium, praseodymium, dysprosium and terbium. The product is trucked to the Port of Santos, and buyers separate it. Serra Verde has agreed to sell its Phase I magnet rare earths to a buyer capitalized by the U.S. government and private capital.
Downstream, CBMM ran a rare-earth pilot plant at its Araxá niobium complex and says its studies so far have not shown economic viability at industrial scale. In Lagoa Santa, Minas Gerais, a SENAI laboratory-factory is set up to make rare-earth alloys and magnets.
Federal law makes a presidential council responsible for approving changes of control at companies holding critical-mineral rights and authorizes tax credits for domestic processing. Whether these tools bring separation and magnet-making into Brazil is still open.
